Frequently Asked Questions
Can you explain the scientific matching process?
GIA has been analyzing and characterizing natural diamond rough for decades, and has been developing techniques to match resulting polished stones using that same data. GIA compares physical dimensions, spectrographic data, and video and still imaging to assess and match the rough stone data to the polished stone. There is no single feature or data set, but the combination of many that GIA relies on for this origin confirmation.
